Presserve writes to The Guardian

Adam Christie wrote to The Guardian in response to Richard Nelsson's remarks in The Guardian (February 11, 2013)

The Guardian's library head Richard Nelsson raises a concern (Guardian, February 11, 2013) about newspaper cuttings libraries that is becoming increasingly widespread - especially as regional newspaper publishing conglomerates close district offices and other premises.

These amazing resources - which pre-date automatic digital archiving, intranets and search engines - have largely been a hidden industry secret.

Mr Nelsson's observations are timely - as a group of journalists in Leeds have started campaigning to try to encourage proprietors to do more to conserve their cuttings libraries and, as far as possible, make them available publicly to local historians and other researchers.

More about this initiative can be found online - at www.presserve.org
